I have sat across the table from F&B directors at some of the finest resorts in Costa Rica. I have heard what they actually care about, not what they say in a press release, but what they need from a supplier before they will put a product in front of a guest or onto a curated gift shop shelf.
It is not the cheapest option. It is not even always the most famous one.
What they want is a partner they do not have to apologize for.
A partner whose product tells a story that elevates the guest experience rather than contradicting it. A partner who can document their practices, honor their commitments, and operate with enough transparency that the resort's own sustainability team does not have to hold their breath every time an auditor asks a question.
That is a high bar. It is the bar we have been meeting for our hospitality partners - including Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, W Hotel Reserva Conchal, and Westin Reserva Conchal - and it is worth explaining why we are able to meet it when many suppliers cannot.
WHAT LUXURY RESORTS ACTUALLY EVALUATE
The hospitality industry's sustainability expectations have changed significantly in recent years. Four Seasons operates a global ESG program called "Four Seasons for Good," built around two pillars: Planet and People. Their Supplier Code of Conduct requires partners to demonstrate criteria across environmental protection, human rights, animal welfare, and responsible sourcing. Single-use plastics elimination, responsible food sourcing, biodiversity protection, and local community engagement are not aspirational - they are operational requirements that properties are measured against annually.
When a Five-Star resort's F&B director evaluates a chocolate supplier, they are not evaluating just the product. They are evaluating whether the supplier's practices can be documented, whether the story can be told to a guest without embarrassment, and whether the partnership strengthens or complicates the resort's own ESG reporting.
Here is how we answer each of those questions.

ORGANIC AND CERTIFIED - VERIFIABLY, NOT JUST IN CLAIMS
Our cacao farms at Llano Azul and El Higuerón are certified organic under USDA NOP standards by Kiwa BCS Costa Rica Limitada (Certificate 4191121374, valid through April 2027). This is not a marketing claim. It is a third-party verified, government-registered certification that can be looked up in the USDA's public Organic Integrity Database.
For a resort whose guests include wellness travelers, health-conscious families, and sophisticated culinary explorers, serving chocolate from a certified organic single-estate farm is a provenance story that holds up to scrutiny. No synthetic chemicals. No artificial fertilizers. No additives in the bars themselves. Every ingredient traceable to source.
This matters for the resort's own documentation. Verified certifications make it possible to include the partnership in ESG reporting without qualification.
LOCALLY SOURCED AND SINGLE-ESTATE - THE STORY IS REAL
Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo is in Guanacaste. Our factory is in Playa Brasilito, Guanacaste. Our cacao farm is in Llano Azul, Alajuela province, northern Costa Rica, a few hours by road. The chocolate that a guest receives at Peninsula Papagayo was grown in Costa Rica, processed in Costa Rica, and delivered from Guanacaste.
This is not "Costa Rican inspired" or "Costa Rican style." It is a product that is entirely of this place.
Four Seasons' own ESG framework explicitly prioritizes local supplier engagement - "supporting local suppliers, engaging local talent, learning from local knowledge and expertise." A single-estate Costa Rican chocolate made by a Costa Rican company, with all production and farming on-site, is the definition of what that commitment looks like in practice.
Resorts that serve our chocolate can make that claim honestly. Resorts that serve imported or blended chocolate from European manufacturers cannot.
NO SINGLE-USE PLASTICS - BY DESIGN
Four Seasons has committed to the elimination of single-use plastics across its properties. This requirement extends to supplier packaging, where properties are "continuing to partner with their suppliers to reduce unnecessary packaging from deliveries, and replacing single-use packaging with reusable materials where feasible."
Our packaging is designed to be fully sustainable. There are no plastic wrappers, no plastic inserts, no unnecessary materials. The bars are hand-wrapped in materials chosen with that commitment in mind. When we deliver to a resort, we are not creating a packaging problem they have to solve.
For a procurement team trying to meet an annual plastics reduction target, this is not a minor detail. It is a qualification.
PURE INGREDIENTS - NOTHING TO HIDE
Our bars contain what the label says and nothing else. Organic cacao, cane sugar, cacao butter, and in some bars, milk powder or a single named ingredient like chili or coffee. No alkalization. No artificial flavors. No emulsifiers. No lecithin. No "natural flavors" that cover a multitude of unknowns.
For a resort whose wellness program positions itself around clean eating - and Four Seasons Peninsula Papagayo has an extensive wellness offering including a dedicated Wellness Villa, nutritionist team, and wellness shala - serving chocolate with hidden ingredients is a contradiction. Serving a bar that is exactly what it says it is, made from ingredients you can name and trace, is consistent with that positioning.
A guest who asks "what is in this?" should be able to get an honest, complete answer in one sentence.

AWARD-WINNING - INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED QUALITY
The Maleku Chocolate line has earned nine international awards across the International Chocolate Awards and the Feria de Chocolate, including three Gold medals. These are blind evaluations by professional tasters - the same standard that wine competitions and Michelin inspectors operate on.
For an F&B director presenting a chocolate to a guest or a sommelier recommending it alongside a tasting menu, independent award recognition provides the third-party credibility that makes the recommendation confident rather than apologetic. We did not win these awards by submitting once and getting lucky. They span multiple years and multiple bars, confirming consistent quality across the range.
A resort can tell guests: these bars have been evaluated by the world's most rigorous chocolate judges. That is a statement most suppliers cannot make.
BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM PROTECTION - VERIFIABLE AND ONGOING
Four Seasons' ESG program specifically prioritizes biodiversity protection, with a commitment to "purchasing and prioritizing sustainable food and other products whenever feasible" and encouraging properties to "support and partner with local biodiversity conservation organizations."
Our farms are not just organic. They are active ecosystems. We use agroforestry and shade-grown methods under natural rainforest canopy. We grow cacao alongside endemic species - banana, avocado, rambutan, guaba and others - that support pollinators and wildlife. We measure the health of our farms not just by yield but by the return of wildlife: the endemic species that choose our land without being planted there, the animals that arrive because the ecosystem supports them.
At El Higuerón, we actively maintain untouched rainforest and have protected a natural wildlife corridor on the property. The commitment to biodiversity is built into how we farm, not added afterward for marketing purposes.
A resort that cites our partnership in its ESG reporting can point to a supplier who is actively increasing biodiversity on its land. That is a material claim. It is also rare.
PRESERVATION OF INDIGENOUS HERITAGE AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT
This is the credential that no other chocolate maker in the world can replicate.
Our farm at Llano Azul contains the Caju archaeological site (A-549 Ca) - a registered pre-Columbian monument associated with the Ron Ron cultural phase, dated to 300 BC through 300 AD. We protect it under Costa Rica's Ley N6703. The cacao trees above it preserve the site from earthworks. We reported it proactively to the National Museum of Costa Rica, which commended the decision. We are the only chocolate maker in the world to protect a certified pre-Columbian archaeological monument on its working farmland.
The brand name Maleku Chocolate was chosen with the explicit blessing of Jakhima, one of the leaders of the three Maleku indigenous communities of northern Costa Rica. There are approximately 650 Maleku people remaining on earth. Jakhima wanted the name used because it carries their story to an audience their community alone cannot reach. We honor that responsibility in everything we do.
Four Seasons' People pillar is explicit: "Wherever we operate, we seek to build strong, mutually beneficial relationships with the people and communities around us." The Tamarindo resort's own case study in Four Seasons' ESG materials highlights the importance of "local organizations committed to sustainability and fair trade" and supporting "authentic guest experiences while supporting the local community."
A partnership with Blue Valley Chocolate is a partnership with a company that is actively preserving the pre-Columbian history of Costa Rica and supporting the survival of its last living indigenous community's cultural legacy. That is a depth of community and heritage engagement that no commodity chocolate supplier can offer.
TRANSPARENCY - A PARTNERSHIP, NOT A TRANSACTION
We believe the relationship between a producer and a hospitality partner should be transparent in both directions. We share our farm data, our certification documents, our production practices, and our sourcing information openly. We welcome visits to the farm and the factory. We can brief an F&B director, a sommelier, or a sustainability officer on any aspect of what we do, because we have nothing to conceal.
For a resort that publishes an annual ESG report and faces scrutiny from guests, travel writers, and third-party certification bodies, a supplier who operates openly is not a luxury - it is a requirement.
We are not the easiest supplier to work with in the sense that we do not make commodity chocolate in unlimited quantities on short notice. But for the right partner - one who wants to serve something genuine, documented, and defensible to their most discerning guests - we are the right supplier.
